Glastonbury is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved artists, Peter Pracownik, who passed away this week.

A well-known figure in the town's artistic and alternative scene, Peter's work left an indelible mark on the community and the wider world.

Peter, born in Bristol, spent much of his life in Glastonbury, where he became synonymous with the town's New Age and mystical heritage. His work, which often featured trippy scenes of Stonehenge, wizards, crystals, and Glastonbury itself, became iconic during the UK free festival scene of the early 1990s. His art resonated with a generation, with many locals fondly remembering his designs adorning everything from posters to tobacco tins.

In the early 1990s, Peter ran a shop on Market Place, now home to Hemp in Avalon, which became a focal point for those drawn to Glastonbury's alternative and spiritual community. His flamboyant personality and approachable nature made him a beloved figure among locals and visitors alike. Many remember his friendly demeanour and his ability to bring Glastonbury's mystical essence to life through his art.

Peter's impact was not confined to Glastonbury. His artwork gained international recognition, particularly in the realms of fantasy and rock music. He produced album covers for bands like Hawkwind, The Albion Band, and even worked with Ritchie Blackmore, the ex-Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist. His connection to music also saw him commissioned to design a T-shirt and poster for a Grateful Dead tour in 1993, a testament to his reach within the psychedelic and rock music scenes.

In addition to his work in music, Peter's knowledge of mythology and legend led to collaborations with US Games, for whom he created the best-selling Dragon Tarot deck. This project, along with his illustrations for the Lord of the Rings Tarot Deck & Card Game, cemented his reputation as a leading fantasy artist. His work on the Wyvern collectible card game became hugely popular in both the USA and Europe.

After many years in Glastonbury, Peter relocated to Cornwall, another place deeply connected to the legends of King Arthur. There, he continued his artistic journey, opening Another Green World gallery and collaborating with fellow artist Nicola Clare Lydon. Yet, despite the move, Peter remained forever linked to Glastonbury, the town that had been his home and muse for so many years.

Peter's passing marks the end of an era for Glastonbury, but his legacy lives on in the art he created and the memories he left behind. His colourful, mystical interpretations of the town's spirit will continue to inspire both locals and the countless visitors drawn to Glastonbury's unique atmosphere.

Peter Pracownik will be remembered not just for his artistic contributions, but for the warmth and creativity he brought to the heart of Glastonbury. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
