Alderman and former councillor John Coles, who served Glastonbury and its residents for around 40 years, has died. His passing has been announced by Glastonbury Town Council, which paid tribute to his long record of public service.

John served as a Glastonbury town councillor for many years and was mayor of the town twice, first in 2006 and again in 2010. He also served as a Mendip District Councillor for Glastonbury St John's Ward and worked as an on-call firefighter in the town.

During his time at Mendip District Council, John held several roles, including Vice Chair of the Council. He was first elected in 2007, retained his seat in 2011 and 2015, and stood down in 2019.

Colleagues said he was known for his willingness to serve wherever he was needed. The council said he never refused a committee appointment, maintained an exemplary attendance record, and was particularly interested in planning and licensing matters.

John was honoured with the title of Alderman in recognition of his service to Glastonbury. The title reflected the contribution he made to the town over many decades.

Glastonbury Town Council said John would be remembered for his dedication, kindness and commitment to public service. The council said its thoughts and deepest condolences were with his family and loved ones.

The flag above Glastonbury Town Hall will be flown at half-mast until after the funeral. Funeral details will be shared in due course in line with the family's wishes.
