A monument in the heart of Glastonbury has been damaged while undergoing renovation, police have said.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident happened in Market Place at about 10 pm on Wednesday, 3 June.

The force said a male youth climbed scaffolding surrounding the monument before breaking off part of it.

Police said the piece was then handed to one of the youth's friends before the group walked away.

The group was described in a police alert as white, aged about 16 or 17, and made up of three males and one female.

Officers are now asking anyone with information to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone with CCTV images from the area at around the time of the incident.

Anyone who can help should call 101 and quote reference number 522615317. Police have asked callers to state that the call is tagged as Neighbourhood Watch.

Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
