Glastonbury garage transformed by mural project following police crackdown on drug use
A garage in Glastonbury, recently shut down by police due to its use for Class A drug activities, has been dramatically transformed into a public artwork by the Glastonbury Murals initiative.
This intervention came on Sunday morning and within an hour, the disused garage boasted a striking new look, showcasing the rapid impact community art can have in rejuvenating neglected spaces.
The Mendip Beat Team, who boarded up the property, have welcomed the swift transformation, praising the efforts of the artists involved with the Glastonbury Mural Trail. This initiative, which operates with proper permissions, is part of a broader effort to enhance the town's aesthetic and engage the community through art.
A police spokesperson said: "It's gratifying to see how quickly a space associated with negative activities can be turned into something positive that the whole community can enjoy."
However, this positive development coincides with a growing concern among local authorities about an increase in unauthorised graffiti across the town.
These tags, not associated with the sanctioned mural trail, are seen as a blight on the community's efforts to beautify public spaces.
The local police are urging anyone with information about these unauthorized tags to come forward. Residents and visitors can report their observations by phoning 101, submitting details online, or discussing directly with members of their local Neighbourhood team.
