Glastonbury Cricket Club has smashed its initial crowdfunding target to help it survive the coronavirus crisis - but it has now set its sights on refurbishing its outdoor nets.

The club initially set a target of £235 to help it cover critical costs and prepare for when the cricket season can resume after coronavirus.

However, with 35 days left as of today (May 27) of the campaign, £575 has been pledged, including a donation by the England and Wales Cricket Board, meaning the club can start to refurbish its outdoor nets when funds allow.

A spokesperson for the club said: "This fund will be used to help the cricket club get through the current Covid-19 crisis.

"We still have bills to pay despite no income from membership and training fees, etc. We are looking to raise a small amount of funds to help cover our basic running costs during this time.

"We appreciate that this is a difficult time for everyone but any support from members and the wider community, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

"This will ensure our survival and help get us up and running as quickly as possible for the local youth once cricket activities can resume.

"It is important for the club that we can provide youth cricketing activities at a subsidised cost, accessible to all, and this fund should help."

The club says the appeal provides:

- Funding to cover critical club overheads

- Help to ensure survival of the Cricket Club in Glastonbury

- Continue to provide accessible youth cricket to the local community

- Refurbish outdoor nets, if sufficient funds are pledged

"By ensuring the survival of Glastonbury Cricket Club, we will continue to encourage more youngsters to learn, develop and enjoy their cricket," the spokesperson said.

"It will encourage them to stay active and fit and enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

"Local residents will also continue to enjoy seeing youngsters playing and learning organised sport on the Tor Sports and Leisure playing fields.

"It will also provide opportunities for the wider Glastonbury community to come together and reconnect.

"The monies raised will help to ensure that the club is not at risk of folding once cricket activities are resumed, whenever that might be.

"Our youth cricketing activities are open to youngsters of all abilities and are provided at a highly subsidised cost.

"This is to make them as accessible as possible to the local community and this fundraising will help us to continue with this approach for the benefit of all."
