National Grid Electricity Distribution has opened applications for its £2 million Community Matters Fund to tackle fuel poverty across the country.

Launched in 2021 in response to the rising cost-of-living crisis, the Community Matters Fund has already backed over 900 grassroots organisations. Now, National Grid is encouraging Glastonbury-based charities, local councils, and community groups to apply for grants of up to £10,000. These grants are earmarked for initiatives to help residents save energy, heat their homes more efficiently, and utilise warm community spaces this winter.

Chris Hayton, Director of Corporate Affairs at National Grid, said: "Unfortunately, many families will continue to struggle with the costs of keeping their homes warm this coming winter. Our fund will help to address fuel poverty and provide much-needed support to those who need it most. Projects that receive funding will offer direct support and energy efficiency measures, contributing to the overall wellbeing and resilience of the communities and homes we serve."

Successful applicants can use the funding for a range of services, including:

  • Energy tariff advice and help in accessing other funding schemes like winter fuel discounts.
  • Energy-efficient solutions for those living in fuel poverty.
  • Operating a 'Warm Bank' in a community building.
  • Enhancing energy efficiency in a community space used as a warm area.
  • Distributing warm packs that could include radiator bleed keys, heavy curtains, blankets, and radiator foil.

The fund is also open to innovative ideas for combating fuel poverty in the local area. Registered charities, community groups, and local authorities can all apply. Applications can be made through the National Grid's website at www.nationalgrid.co.uk/community-matters-fund. The deadline for submissions is Friday, 27th October.
