Glastonbury care firm lands in Westminster Abbey leadership book
By Laura Linham 1st Jul 2026
Glastonbury-based Candlelight Care has landed a place in a 750-page book about monarchy, democracy and leadership launched at Westminster Abbey.
Monarchy and Democracy: A History of Leadership explores the changing roles of the Crown and Parliament in the UK and Commonwealth, while also profiling organisations from across business, public life and culture.
The book was officially launched at Westminster Abbey's College Garden last month. Published by St James's House in partnership with the History of Parliament Trust, it includes a feature on Candlelight Care and the role of leadership in social care.
More than 500 people attended the launch, including figures from parliament, industry and the media. The event also included a panel conversation with contributors Robert Jobson, Russell Myers and Katie Nicholl, plus speeches and the official presentation of the book.
Candlelight Care chairman James Catley-Day said the company was proud to use the opportunity to champion people working in social care.
He said: "It was a privilege for Candlelight to be invited to contribute to such a respected publication, produced in association with the History of Parliament Trust whose board members include members of both Houses of Parliament, and to be featured alongside organisations and leaders from across the business and public sectors.
"At Candlelight, we believe leadership is demonstrated not through titles, but through the actions we take every day to improve the lives of others. We were proud to use this opportunity to champion the extraordinary work of those in social care, whose compassion, professionalism and unwavering commitment often go unseen."
The fully illustrated publication has been written by a team of academics, bestselling authors and royal commentators, including Robert Jobson, Russell Myers and Katie Nicholl. It spans the medieval origins of parliamentary power through to the constitutional monarchy of today.
Dr Jennifer Davey, director at the History of Parliament Trust, said the book explores the history and evolution of UK and Commonwealth governance, while also profiling organisations chosen for their relevance to "leadership, innovation, sustainability and governance".
Stephen van der Merwe, a group director at the SJH Group, said interviews with leaders of companies such as Candlelight Care give the book a first-hand view of how organisations are shaping the future across different sectors.
Monarchy and Democracy: A History of Leadership is being published in print and e-book formats. It is being made available to political, institutional and educational audiences in the UK, Europe and the Commonwealth.
