Glastonbury businesses pledge to become breastfeeding friendly

By Laura Linham 16th Jul 2021

Somerset Maternity Voices are on a mission to make as many shops, cafes and restaurants in Glastonbury as possible pledge to support breastfeeding mums.

The Positive About Breastfeeding scheme has got off to a flying start in the town, with the Excalibur Cafe, Hundred Monkeys, Lords of the Wildwood Community Tea Rooms, The Blue Note, Mocha Berry Cafe, Heaphys Cafe and Lazy Gecko Cafe all saying they will do everything they can to support new mums who need to feed their infants.

And a little way outside of the town, The Drawing Room in Butleigh have also signed up to the scheme.

The UK has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in the world, with just 34 per cent of babies receiving breast milk at six months of age, compared to 62 per cent in Sweden. The low numbers have been attributed to reduced breastfeeding support and negative attitude towards breastfeeding in public.

While legally all businesses have to allow breastfeeding, until recently only a handful of places have publicised that they are breastfeeding friendly.

But the Positive About Breastfeeding scheme helps mums to identify the places where they can feel comfortable about breastfeeding in public, knowing that they will be supported even if another customer makes a complaint.
