As the general election approaches on July 4, voters in Glastonbury and Street are reminded that for the first time, identification will be required to vote.

Those without one of the 20 accepted forms of ID need to act swiftly to avoid being turned away at the polls. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is today, June 26, at 5pm.

Residents can apply online by submitting a digital photo and either a National Insurance number or a document verifying their identity, such as a birth certificate or bank statement.

Accepted IDs at polling stations include UK driving licences, passports, various national identity cards, and concessionary travel passes, among others. It is crucial that the ID resembles the voter and matches the name registered on the electoral roll, though minor name variations like "Jim" for "James" are permissible.

The need for ID stems from changes aimed at enhancing the integrity of the voting process.
