A Glastonbury community group has launched a campaign to buy land at Windmill Hill to preserve what it calls "a precious part of Glastonbury's heritage".

The Friends of St Edmund's Well Community Interest Company (CIC) hopes to raise £20,000 to help purchase land known as Wilf's Field, off Selwood Road.

The site, which includes St Edmund's Well, was once owned by the late Wilf Peddle – affectionately remembered in the town as the "Glastonbury Egg Man" for delivering eggs from his Morris Minor van. Mr Peddle died in June 2023 aged 74.

The land is expected to go to auction later this year with a guide price of around £60,000. The CIC says it has already secured around £35,000 and is seeking the remaining funds to be in a strong position at the auction.

"Glastonbury has already lost many of its traditional orchards," the group said. "Wilf's Field offers a rare chance to protect a living link to our past, while also creating a regenerative space for the future."

If successful, the group – made up of Windmill Hill residents – plans to restore the orchard, plant commemorative trees, enhance local biodiversity and provide opportunities for community activities and volunteering.
