A fundraiser has been launched to create a mural in Market Square to honour Raymond 'Merlin' Rutter, a much-loved local figure who passed away at the age of 77.

Merlin, instantly recognisable in his blue robes and wizard's hat, was a familiar presence outside Glastonbury Abbey, where he offered rune readings and shared wisdom with both visitors and locals. His passing on 20 February has led to an outpouring of tributes, with many remembering him as a kind and generous soul who truly embodied the spirit of the town.

Organiser Gabriel Avalon has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise £850 to fund materials for the artwork, including paint and boards. Permission has been granted for the mural to be displayed in Market Square, and an artist is already in place to bring the tribute to life.

Any extra funds raised will be donated to the Glastonbury Community Fridge, a cause close to Merlin's heart.

Former town crier David Greenway paid tribute, saying: "He really was very much a part of the furniture of Glastonbury. His friendliness, kindness, generosity and warmth were spread so widely and so freely. RIP Ray."

Avalon added: "We have the wall, we have the artist – now we just need the materials. Any support would be greatly appreciated."

Those wishing to contribute to the fundraiser can do so via the GoFundMe page.
