Rail passengers should check journeys as Frome services are disrupted by Portway bridge work on November 1-2, with buses replacing trains.

Rail passengers are being urged to check their journeys ahead of major engineering work affecting services through Frome.

On Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November, trains will not call at Frome station due to refurbishment of the Portway railway bridge, just north of the station on the A362.

During this period:

  • Buses will replace trains between Westbury and Frome.
  • Services from London Paddington towards Taunton, and from Bristol Temple Meads towards Weymouth, will use an alternative route and will not stop at Frome.
  • The A362 under the bridge is fully closed to traffic until Monday 24 November. A diversion is clearly signposted and a pedestrian walkway remains in place.

The bridge, built in the 1970s, is being strengthened to handle more frequent and faster train services. The disruption is described by Network Rail as "vital … to make sure we can reopen the road on time" and ensure long‑term safety for rail traffic.

The local Sunday market at Frome Independent Market on 2 November is proceeding but visitors are advised to allow extra travel time and to use signed diversions if driving.
