Paul James, a former headteacher of Crispin School in Street, is continuing his ambitious challenge to walk the length of Italy in support of the children's charity Winston's Wish.

With local backing, including pupils from St John's Infants School in Glastonbury, Paul is raising funds to help children cope with grief after the loss of a loved one.

Last week, pupils at St John's Infants took part in a sponsored Welly Walk and cake sale, raising a little over £230 for the cause. "Thank you so much to Mrs Devane, the headteacher at St John's, the children, and parents for their amazing support and a truly joyful day," he said.

Paul is currently walking 240km along the southern Via Francigena in Italy, as part of his ongoing efforts to raise £1,000 for Winston's Wish. So far, he has raised £845 towards this goal. Winston's Wish provides vital support to children who have lost a parent or sibling, helping them to navigate their grief and rebuild their lives. The charity's work is close to Paul's heart, as he lost his own father just before his 14th birthday.

"I've already walked 1,200km from the Swiss border to Miturno, south-east of Rome," he said "This time, I'm walking another 240km, hoping to raise as much money as possible for this incredible charity. I'll continue my walk in stages, and I aim to reach Santa Maria di Leuca at the very tip of Italy next year."

Paul has raised over £7,600 for Winston's Wish through previous fundraising walks. His current journey, which began on 19th September, is being undertaken solo, with James carrying all his supplies and staying in budget accommodation. He admits the walk is challenging, especially following a serious back injury in 2022, but says it's worth it to support grieving children.

In addition to his walk, he is encouraging local schools to get involved in Children's Grief Awareness Week, which runs from 18th to 24th November. He hopes to raise awareness of the importance of supporting children during difficult times of loss.
