Two men in Glastonbury have been fined by Avon and Somerset Police after repeatedly breaking the government's lockdown rules to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The two men were reported to be in Magdalene Street drinking at 11am yesterday (April 15). The police had previously engaged with the duo and explained rules but this was not heeded.

A spokesperson said: "After weeks of trying to educate, engage and encourage, we have issued two people, who were persistently loitering in Glastonbury town centre, fines for breaching government regulations.

"This was not taken lightly and we did everything to dissuade but, in the end, they did not listen. As is our practice, the last resort is enforcement and so they were handed penalty notices."

Chief Constable Andy Marsh has thanked the overwhelming majority of the public for working with police officers to respect the Government's advice to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

He said: "We are trying to support this new law and encourage people to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.

"We're doing this through sound judgement and common sense. We have lots of PCSOs and officers out on the streets and we are encouraging people to comply with the legislation and to protect lives and for their own good."
