The latest crime statistics show a slight increase in reported incidents in Glastonbury during August 2024, with 123 crimes recorded in the town compared to 114 in July. This represents a 7.9% rise in overall crime, with notable increases in categories such as anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime.
The data shows that violent crime continues to be the most frequently reported issue in the town, with 37 incidents recorded in August compared to 35 in July. This category includes a range of offences such as assault and harassment, and remains a key area of focus for local police.
Anti-social behaviour—which can involve anything from public disturbances to vandalism—also saw a rise, jumping from 14 incidents in July to 19 in August. This category is often linked to youth-related disturbances and community complaints, and police are urging residents to report any concerns early to prevent further escalation.
Another increase was seen in vehicle crime, which rose from just one incident in July to seven in August. Vehicle crime includes theft from and of vehicles, as well as criminal damage to cars. The spike has prompted local authorities to remind residents to be vigilant about securing their vehicles and not leaving valuables in sight.
Meanwhile, some categories saw a decrease or remained stable. Burglary numbers dropped from four in July to two in August, and shoplifting remained a persistent issue, with 17 recorded incidents in August—up slightly from 16 in July.
A police spokesperson commented: "While it's disappointing to see an overall rise in crime figures, we're continuing to work closely with the community to address the specific areas of concern, particularly anti-social behaviour and violent crime. We urge residents to keep reporting any suspicious activity, as local information is invaluable in helping us respond effectively."
Public order offences—which include crimes such as affray, threatening behaviour, and breaches of the peace—fell slightly from 18 in July to 13 in August. However, criminal damage and arson reports increased, with eight incidents in August compared to ten the previous month.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and continue reporting any concerns to help local police maintain a safer community. For more information or to report a crime, visit the Avon and Somerset Police website or contact the local station.
