October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer.

Across the UK, breast screening is estimated to prevent around 1,300 deaths each year, and locally, women in Glastonbury and Street are being reminded to stay vigilant and make use of the free screening services available.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, but when diagnosed early, 98% of women survive for five years or more. Screening can detect changes before any visible or palpable signs appear, making it crucial for early intervention.

Who is eligible for screening?

Women aged between 50 and 71 are automatically invited for free NHS breast screening every three years. In the Glastonbury and Street area, invitations typically start around a woman's 53rd birthday. If you've missed your screening or haven't booked an appointment, you can still contact your local NHS breast screening service to arrange one—no matter how long it's been since you received your invitation.

Where to get screened locally

For women in Glastonbury and Street, breast screening services are available at local hospitals, and mobile screening units are also set up in convenient community locations. The closest permanent screening facilities are in Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, but keep an eye out for mobile units that occasionally visit the area, offering screening sessions closer to home.

Be breast aware

Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel is an important part of staying breast aware. Regular self-examinations can help you notice any changes that could be early signs of breast cancer, such as new lumps, changes in size or shape, alterations in skin texture, nipple discharge, or persistent pain.

Even if you have regular mammograms, continue checking your breasts each month. If you notice anything unusual, don't wait—see your GP for an evaluation as soon as possible.

For more information on how to check your breasts and what to look out for, visit the NHS website.

By staying informed and proactive, we can all help reduce the impact of breast cancer in our community. Take this opportunity to remind your loved ones to book their screening appointments and stay breast aware this October.
