Crime in Street dropped in June – but while overall numbers were down, burglary and public order offences both saw sharp increases.

Figures released by police show 86 crimes were recorded across the town last month, compared to 97 in May. Violent crime remained the biggest category, making up more than a third of all reports. There were 31 cases logged in June, down from 42 the month before, but still far higher than any other type of offence.

Burglaries saw the most dramatic jump, with nine recorded in June compared to just one in May. Public order offences – which cover threatening or abusive behaviour and public disturbances – also rose, from eight cases to 12.

Anti-social behaviour stayed fairly steady, with 14 incidents reported, one fewer than the previous month. Other thefts dropped slightly from seven to six, while criminal damage and arson also dipped from six to four.

Shoplifting cases were nearly halved, falling from nine in May to four in June, and drug offences were down from two to one. However, two possession of weapons offences were recorded in June, compared to none the month before. Robbery remained low, with one case reported in both months.

Police said they would continue to prioritise burglary and violent crime as key areas of concern. Officers are expected to carry out high-visibility patrols around the town centre and residential areas over the summer.

A spokesperson said: "We recognise burglary and violent crime remain concerns for residents in Street. Our neighbourhood teams are working with the community to tackle these issues, and we will continue to act on intelligence and maintain a visible presence."
