Community rallies against hate: Street volunteers erase vandalism from Library Gardens mural

By Laura Linham 22nd Jan 2024

In an immediate response to an unsettling act of vandalism at the library gardens, a dedicated team of volunteers from Street Parish Council and the village community took to the task on Sunday afternoon.

The mural, an emblem of local heritage, was defaced with the names 'Frank' and 'Jacob', alongside an offensive swastika, crudely spray-painted in red.

The reprehensible act quickly drew the ire of residents, prompting a wave of condemnation across social media.

Armed with sponges, soap, elbow grease and a determination to remove hateful symbolism, the volunteers set about meticulously removing the graffiti.

As one volunteer put it: "There is absolutely 'no place for Nazi symbology in Street."

Following the incident, the matter has been escalated to the police, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the parish council on 01458 440 588 or the police on 101.
