In the recent Ofsted report, Butleigh Church of England Primary School has been lauded for its overall effectiveness and quality of education.
The inspection was carried out on June 13th and 14th of June, 2023, which has helped further cement the school's previous 'Good' rating.
The report highlighted the school's successful efforts in cultivating an environment where pupils enjoy learning, feel well looked after, and are guided by ambitious leaders. It was noted that staff have high expectations for pupils' behaviour, ensuring that disruptive actions are dealt with swiftly, leading to a school environment where bullying is rare. The pupils have found the school to be a safe space where they can freely communicate their concerns to adults.
The inspection team praised a particular emphasis on supporting pupils' emotional well-being. Initiatives like assemblies and inviting visitors provide opportunities for students to learn about building healthy relationships and staying safe. Parents and carers of students have been particularly vocal about their appreciation for these changes, which are aimed at helping children develop both emotionally and academically.
The school's success in prioritising reading and making phonics teaching from the early years was commended. The staff's training in teaching phonics, backed by a robust assessment system, allows for pupils who fall behind to be quickly identified and given extra help, thereby creating a culture where reading is viewed as exciting.
The report lauded Butleigh's high expectations for what pupils can achieve and the continuous improvements made to the curriculum. Staff develop children's mathematical vocabulary well in mathematics, providing a strong foundation for their future learning. The focus on number knowledge allows pupils to deepen their understanding as they solve more complex problems.
The school's support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) was highlighted as exemplary, with leaders identifying these pupils early and with precision. It was noted that staff adapt learning well to meet the needs of pupils with SEND, ensuring their progress through the curriculum.
Pupils are guided by the school motto, 'Butleigh Brilliance', and the values of 'be kind,' 'be respectful,' 'be safe,' and 'be ready'. These values, along with the emphasis on personal development and an understanding of different cultures, faiths, and identities, prepare pupils to be responsible and respectful citizens.
Staff and leaders' cooperation and shared high ambitions for the school are applauded. Governors have a clear vision for the school's future and are developing their understanding of what the school does well and the areas that need improvement.
In terms of safeguarding, the report deemed the arrangements effective, with leaders insisting that safeguarding is a high priority in school. Detailed records are maintained, and swift communication with external agencies is a norm when necessary.
Despite the commendations, the report did indicate room for improvement, suggesting the curriculum for all subjects be sufficiently detailed so that pupils know and remember more. It also advised that leaders should make better use of assessments to check pupils' knowledge and understanding in some subjects.
