A water supply company has received a £3,000 fine after pleading guilty to a roadworks offence which took place in Glastonbury last year.

Somerset County Council is responsible for managing the road network and prosecuted Bristol Water as part of its commitment to minimising disruption and keeping the public safe.

The case, heard at Taunton Magistrates on Thursday October 29, was:

Bristol Water PLC pleaded guilty to one offence contrary to the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) under S56 for failing to comply with a legal direction given by the street authority not to occupy Glastonbury High Street due to the impending carnival on November 14 2019.

Bristol Water was fined £3,000 for the offence and ordered to pay £2,947.41 in costs and a victim surcharge of £181.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "The Glastonbury Carnival is one of the highlights of the year for the local community.

"Ignoring a legal direction could have had major consequences on the event and may have scuppered many hours of hard work from by organisers.

"If you want to work on our highways, you must co-operate with the highways authority and avoid unnecessary disruption on our roads. However, on this occasion, this was ignored.

"I'm pleased to see significant fines continually handed out and hope this sends a strong message that we will take action when it is in the public interest to do so."
