Assessing the damage : Glastonbury Abbey makes safe Abbott's Hall after overhang fall
Engineers have made safe part of one of the most ancient parts of Glastonbury Abbey and are now assessing how it can be repaired - and at what cost.
The fall involved a large overhanging fragment from the corner of what remains of the Abbot's Hall.
The Deputy Commercial Activity Manager of Glastonbury Abbey told Nub News: " At the moment we are making it safe and are discussing how to consolidate what remains with conservators.
"Once we have approved a plan with Historic England and understand the costs involved we will be able to provide more information."
The Abbot's Hall was one of the principal buildings forming the abbot's range, a group of structures dedicated to the provision of hospitality for the abbot's guests. The current ruins of the hall date to the early 14th century, and comprises of the southwest corner of the hall and the attached porch, which provided the reception area for visitors.
The Abbey team added : "This is an unfortunate reminder of how delicate these beautiful, historic buildings can be and a reason why we ask visitors to not stand or climb on any of the ruins. We hope that this doesn't affect the enjoyment of our beautiful site. "
