91-year-old Ralph White has embarked on an extraordinary mission to climb Glastonbury Tor 200 times before his next birthday, raising funds for Parkinson's research in the process.
Ralph's inspiration to support Parkinson's research stems from his personal connection to the disease, as one of his close relatives and two friends have been diagnosed. The funds raised will help researchers at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience, where scientists are making progress in developing treatments that may slow or stop the progression of Parkinson's.
Ralph reflected on his journey so far: "On reaching the grand old age of 90, to do a bit of good in the world, I signed up for this fundraiser for my chosen charity, Parkinson's Research. Starting on my birthday on July 2nd 2023, my first challenge was to climb Mount Everest remotely by repeat-climbing the Glastonbury Tor. It took 55 climbs, completed on Jan 30th 2024 and raised £928, thanks to all the generous donors."
He continued, "Next challenge was to increase my 55 climbs to 100 climbs by my 91st birthday, which I completed on July 2nd, 2024, increasing the sum raised to £1896. My new challenge is to complete another 100 climbs by my 92nd birthday on July 2nd 2025. Here goes! Latest climb is #114."
Ralph's determination has captured the imagination of those he meets along the way on the Tor, as he shares stories with fellow walkers. He is hopeful that his challenge will inspire others to support his cause.
To follow Ralph's progress and help spread the word, he encourages supporters to share his journey and contribute to the cause. Donations can be made online to help Ralph in his mission to support Parkinson's research.
