Millfield skier George Black has been selected for the Great Britain Snowsport Alpine squad for the 2022-2023 season.

Lower Sixth student George, who races in both slalom and giant slalom, gained his place in the squad following a string of impressive performances, which culminated in a strong showing at the British Ski Championships in Tignes, France. At the event, George finished as the third overall skier, and as the highest ranked U18 and U21 competitor.

The budding sportsman is no stranger to the international stage, having represented Team GB at both the U14 and U16 age groups.

Seventeen-year-old George grew up in the French Alps, and began skiing at the age of three. He joined Meribel Ski Club when he was seven, where his skiing went from strength to strength.

George joined Millfield in Year 9, and currently studies BTEC Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. He chose to come to Millfield as he thought the small class sizes and learning support on offer would help him adapt to learning a new language, having only studied in French before.

George said, "I am delighted to have been selected into the British squad. The selection will support me in gaining race entries that will lower my FIS points over the next season, which will then hopefully form a pathway for me to reach Europa Cup level races. With the majority of my training during the season taking place in Austria, my business teacher Mrs Miller has been really supportive in helping me organise my time and catch-up on work that I have missed."

Consistent performances in National Schools' Championships prove how Millfield ranks as one of the best schools for Ski instruction and development on the British Isles. Training and conditioning is tailored to each student, allowing them to improve at a pace and style that they enjoy. Millfield enjoys close links with the major British Ski Race Academies, so high performers are supported when away from school at training camps or competitions.
