Plans to stage a referendum on the future of local government in Somerset have been put on hold following an angry letter from the secretary of state.

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is in the closing stages of a public consultation on two rival proposals for Somerset's future governance – One Somerset and Stronger Somerset.

Firefighters from Glastonbury helped rescue three people and a dog from a vehicle after it crashed off the road in Wedmore this morning (April 19).

Just after 4am, a fire appliance from Cheddar and one from Glastonbury attended a crash on the B3151 Cheddar Road in Wedmore, involving a single vehicle, where the vehicle had left the road and was on its side.

Thatchers Cider has launched an initiative to help support local pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants as they begin to reopen as Government restrictions are lifted, and venues in Glastonbury, Meare and Butleigh are already taking part.

Participating venues are being sent a supply of limited-edition T-shirts free of charge that will be available for regulars to purchase – and show their support for their local business.

Somerset County Council's Highways team is continuing work to remove diseased and dangerous ash trees , with the latest safety scheme, on the Polden Hills section of the A39 Bath Road between the Crandon Bridge traffic signals at Bawdrip and the A361 Pipers Inn junction at Ashcott, will take place across two weeks.

Work starts on Monday 19 April, between 9am and 3.30pm each day, and is scheduled to end on Friday 30 April. The road will be reopened to traffic outside these times and during the weekend of April 24-25.

Excitement is building about the Bath & West Country Festival, which is replacing the Royal Bath & West Show for 2021, as new attractions and performers are confirmed.

This one-off event takes place on 27th-29th August and, while retaining the Main Ring, Main Lawn, Woodland and Countryside Arena which visitors know and love, the organisers have also announced new features to enjoy.
