Winter is fast approaching and Glastonbury residents are being urged to take precautions by getting their flu and COVID-19 jabs.

Both vaccines are particularly crucial for those at higher risk of severe illness.

Who should get vaccinated?

The NHS is offering flu and COVID-19 vaccinations for people who:

  • Are 65 or older (including those turning 65 by 31 March 2024)
  • Have certain health conditions or learning disabilities
  • Are pregnant
  • Live with someone who has a weakened immune system
  • Are carers
  • Are frontline health or social care workers
  • Reside in a care home

Children who were 2 or 3 years old on 31 August 2023, school-aged children from Reception to Year 11, and those with certain health conditions are also eligible for the children's flu vaccine.

How to get vaccinated

If you're eligible for an NHS flu jab, you can:

  • Contact your GP to book an appointment
  • Locate a pharmacy offering NHS flu vaccination (if you're 18 or over)
  • Book online or via the NHS App (if you're 18 or over)

For the COVID-19 vaccine, appointments can be booked online or walk-in options are available. Those aged 12 and over can book without waiting for an invitation.

Staying well in cold weather

The winter months can be particularly harsh for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, those on low incomes, and people with long-term health conditions. Experts recommend heating homes to at least 18°C in frequently used rooms. Grants, benefits, and advice are available to make your home more energy-efficient and to assist with heating bills.

When to seek medical advice

If you're part of an at-risk group and start to feel unwell, it's crucial to seek medical advice promptly. Pharmacists, GPs, and NHS 111 can advise on minor illnesses and urgent medical issues.

Looking out for others

Residents are also reminded to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members. Ensure they have adequate food supplies, and prescription medicines, and offer help if icy conditions make it difficult for them to go out.

For more information on winter health, visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111. In emergencies, head to A&E or call 999 immediately.
