Starting this week, visitors to Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve near Glastonbury will need to pay for parking.

Somerset Wildlife Trust (SWT) has implemented a £3 parking fee, a move that aims to support the site's management and curb recent increases in anti-social behaviour.

An SWT spokesperson explained that the rising costs of managing nature reserves have led to this decision. "The income from the car parking charges at Westhay Moor is vital for us. It will significantly aid in the essential conservation work at this cherished reserve," they added.

Park with Ease has been contracted to manage the new ticketing system for three years.

The introduction of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is expected to streamline parking and reduce incidents like car theft and misuse of the car park.

"The upgrade of the car park surface in 2021 was meant to benefit our members and visitors. Unfortunately, it has also led to an increase in anti-social activities, accelerating the wear and tear of the facility," the spokesperson noted.

The £3 fee will be charged per visit, with repeated entries on the same day incurring additional charges. SWT is also offering parking season tickets, priced at £65 for a year or £40 for six months.
