Major roadworks on the A39 Glastonbury Road have been extended again, with drivers in Wells and Glastonbury now facing disruption until Friday, 7 November.

But there will be a brief reprieve. The road will temporarily reopen from 5pm on Thursday, 31 October until 8am on Monday, 3 November to allow Bridgwater Carnival carts to pass through safely.

Since early September, the A39 has been one-way only between Jocelyn Drive and the Strawberry Way roundabout. Motorists heading into Wells from Glastonbury can still drive as normal — but anyone trying to leave Wells must divert via the A371 to Shepton Mallet and the A361 back to Glastonbury.

The works involve digging up the road for gas, water and power upgrades, plus a full resurfacing job.

The council says the extension is vital to finish essential infrastructure improvements. But with delays already hitting drivers and businesses, patience is wearing thin.

Somerset Council said it is working with contractors and Bridgwater Carnival organisers to keep disruption to a minimum. Motorists are being warned to allow extra time and follow signed diversions.
