A large commercial building in Castle Cary was completely destroyed after a fire broke out on Friday, 10 October, with multiple fire crews from Castle Cary, Wincanton, Martock, Shepton Mallet, Wells, Street and Yeovil called in to assist.

The fire began in a large fence before spreading to the main building and adjoining outbuildings. Somerset fire control confirmed the building was 100% destroyed and that the fire is believed to have been accidental.

To tackle the blaze, crews deployed:

  • 4 breathing apparatus
  • 3 hose reel jets
  • 3 main jets
  • 2 safety jets
  • 3 thermal imaging cameras

According to Somerton Fire Station, once on scene, firefighters Nicky, Max, Paul and Simmo worked in sector one to prevent spread and attack the main building. Meanwhile, Tom supplied water to the base pump via a Yeovil water carrier.

The destroyed property serviced local businesses, including workshop and storage functions. Neighbours reported seeing heavy smoke and flames visible from a distance. To date, no injuries have been reported.

Investigations will follow to confirm the exact cause. Surrounding property owners are now reviewing structural safety and insurance assessments.
