Tribute mural painted in Glastonbury to honour ‘Merlin’

A tribute mural has been painted in Glastonbury to honour Raymond 'Merlin' Rutter, a much-loved local figure who passed away at the age of 77.

Merlin, instantly recognisable by his blue robes and wizard's hat, became a familiar presence outside Glastonbury Abbey, offering rune readings and sharing wisdom with visitors and locals alike. His passing, reported on Thursday, 20 February, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the community, remembering him as a kind and generous soul who embodied the spirit of the town.

To honour his memory, artist Dan from Rogue's Gallery has created a mural on the Aldi paint wall, featuring symbolic elements including runes representing those lost in the community over the past year.

Throughout the painting process, passersby stopped to express their appreciation, recognising Merlin's deep impact on Glastonbury.

Dan said: "Merlin was someone who transcended boundaries—he connected with everyone, from those on the streets to visitors and locals alike. I've had people from all walks of life stopping by today, acknowledging what a loss he is."

Plans are now being discussed to create a permanent tribute in the town, with a Facebook group, 'A Memorial for Merlin', set up to coordinate efforts. Discussions are underway to secure funding and a dedicated space for a lasting mural or artwork.

Originally from the Midlands, Ray Rutter made Glastonbury his home in later years, becoming a beloved figure in the town's unique community. His deep involvement in spiritual exploration took him across the world, from running a spiritual shop in Bridgnorth to travelling through Portugal and Spain in his 'Reiki Bus'. However, it was in Glastonbury where he truly found his place, becoming affectionately known as 'Merlin'.

Former town crier David Greenway paid tribute, saying: "He really was very much a part of the furniture of Glastonbury. His friendliness, kindness, generosity and warmth were spread so widely and so freely. RIP Ray."

A video documenting the creation of the tribute mural can be viewed on Glastonbury Gabriel's YouTube channel.
