Street's former Unity Club goes up for auction

The former Unity Club in Street is going up for auction with a guide price of £125,000.

The freehold property in Leigh Road is being sold on the instructions of Joint Fixed Charge Receivers, with online bidding due to open at 10 am on Thursday, 10 September. The auction listing currently gives an end time of 1.40 pm for the lot.

The single-storey former working men's club extends to around 634.3 sq m — or 6,828 sq ft — and sits on a 0.124-hectare, or 0.305-acre, site.

It includes a hall, lounge, kitchen, office, storage areas and toilets, together with additional basement storage. There is also parking for 15 vehicles.

The auction particulars describe the building as being in dated condition and requiring refurbishment, while also saying it may have potential for an alternative use, subject to the necessary consents. Vacant possession is being offered.

The site stands on the eastern side of Leigh Road, close to its junction with Hindhayes Lane, in an area containing both homes and commercial premises.

The Unity Club has a long association with Street. Companies House records show The Unity Club (Street) Limited was incorporated on 27 October 1922, with its registered office at the Leigh Road premises. The company remains listed as active, with its stated business activity recorded as a licensed club.

The venue has previously been promoted as a social club offering facilities including a function room, skittle alley, darts, pool and snooker tables. Somerset CAMRA's directory also lists the Unity Club at the Leigh Road address.

The property is being marketed as Lot 9 in the SW Property Auctions online sale, with a minimum opening bid of £125,000. The auctioneer makes clear that the guide price is an indication rather than a guaranteed sale price, and that the lot will be subject to a reserve.

Any redevelopment or change of use would require the relevant approvals from Somerset Council.
