Street volunteers needed to help tackle lonelines
By Laura Linham 11th Mar 2026
Volunteers are being sought in Street to help support older residents who may be feeling lonely or isolated.
Age UK Somerset says there are currently people in the area waiting to be matched with volunteers through its Wellbeing Friends and Walk and Talk programmes.
The schemes pair volunteers with an older person for regular visits or short walks, offering companionship and conversation to help reduce feelings of loneliness.
At present, the charity says there are not enough volunteers locally to meet demand.
Helping older residents feel less alone
Through the programmes, volunteers spend time each week chatting with an older resident or taking them out for a short walk.
Age UK Somerset says seeing a friendly face and having someone to talk to can make a significant difference for people who live alone.
Volunteers help provide companionship and connection, supporting the charity's wider work to tackle loneliness among older residents across Somerset.
How to get involved
The charity is encouraging anyone in Street who can spare a little time to consider volunteering.
Those interested in finding out more about becoming a Wellbeing Friend or Walk and Talk volunteer can contact Age UK Somerset for further information.
Street Parish Council shared the appeal in its latest community updates, encouraging residents to consider whether they could help support older neighbours.
