Street Thursday Market to close just before Christmas
By Laura Linham 23rd Oct 2026
Street's Thursday market will close just before Christmas — less than two years after the parish council took over running it. The final market will take place on 17 December 2026.
Street Parish Council unanimously agreed the closure at its Full Council meeting on Tuesday 20 October. The decision followed a review examining running costs, difficulties attracting and retaining regular traders, and the effects of the weekly High Street road closure.
The council also considered the impact of diverted traffic along Vestry Road. Feedback from the recent public consultation formed part of the review, alongside views shared by people involved with the market.
The parish council took responsibility for the weekly market on 1 April 2025. It was among the services transferred from Somerset Council as part of its devolution programme.
The review examined the market's location and how the High Street closure affected shops, other businesses and residents. It also considered the cost of operating a safe, well-run market.
In its announcement, the council thanked regular traders and market officers for their commitment to Street. It also thanked residents and visitors who had supported the Thursday market.
The council said it would explore other ways to support the High Street following the closure.
