Street Parish Council has explained why Union Flag banners were removed from the High Street, saying councillors voted to replace them with banners supporting the Shoemakers Museum.

The response follows criticism from residents and a call for the flags to be reinstated through the Remembrance period.

A spokesperson for Street Parish Council said the display was reviewed at the Full Council meeting on Tuesday, 15 September.

The spokesperson said: "Following discussion, Full Council resolved to replace the Union Flag banners with Shoemakers Museum banners to demonstrate continued support for the Shoemakers Museum."

The council said the matter would normally have been considered by its Community Engagement Committee, which deals with issues including banner sequencing and displays.

However, that committee had been paused during a period of officer recruitment, meaning the decision went to Full Council instead.

The spokesperson said: "While councillors and residents have expressed a range of views regarding the banners, the change was agreed as a collective decision of the Council."

The Community Engagement Committee will review future banner arrangements at its next meeting and make recommendations to the full council.
