By Carly Dutton-Edwards 25th Sep 2026
Residents registered with GP practices across West Mendip are being encouraged to take advantage of a new round exercise classes designed to improve strength, mobility, balance and confidence.
West Mendip Primary Care Network (PCN) has once again partnered with Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) to offer a series of fully funded programmes aiming to help local people become more active in a supportive and welcoming environment.
The courses follow previous successful programmes and are open to eligible patients registered with Glastonbury Health Centre, Glastonbury Surgery, Wells City Practice, Wells Health Centre and Vine Surgery Partnership in Street.
A previous participant highlighted the positive impact the classes have had on their day-to-day life, saying, "The instructor provided a great class giving us simple manageable exercises that have been effective for me in daily life. I've been able to implement these exercises at home and at work."
The classes will take place on Saturday afternoons, starting on 3rd October at St Dunstan's House Community Health and Wellbeing Centre in Glastonbury. Participants can choose from three programmes consisting of 10 sessions each:
- Better Movement Beginners - designed for those who are new to exercise or returning after a break
- Better Movement Intermediate - aimed at people who already have some exercise experience and would like to further develop their strength, mobility and confidence
- Stronger for Longer - a course for adults aged 50+ focusing on strength, balance and healthy ageing
All sessions are led by trained instructors and can be adapted to suit a range of abilities and fitness levels. Participants are also invited to stay after class for a hot beverage and an opportunity to socialise.
Alice Cook, Enhanced Care Lead at West Mendip PCN who leads on frailty and prevention says, "Being physically active can play an important role in maintaining health, wellbeing and independence. These courses offer a friendly and supportive environment where people can improve their strength and confidence while exercising at a pace that feels right for them."
A limited number of places are available at no charge to eligible patients, but booking is essential and closes on 30th September.
