As the festive season unfolds, Avon and Somerset Police are intensifying their efforts in Street and Glastonbury to curb drink and drug driving.
Throughout December, officers will conduct roadside checks and engage with motorists to highlight the dangers of driving under the influence.
This dedicated operation, running all month, will leverage community intelligence to identify and target drivers suspected of being under the influence. The police are encouraging residents in Street and Glastonbury to report any suspicions of intoxicated driving, contributing to the safety of our roads.
The public's reports will be instrumental, used alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and CCTV to guide officers to potential offenders for prompt action.
Recent data from Crimestoppers UK indicates a growing public willingness to report drink and drug drivers. Between January and September this year, the charity, which facilitates anonymous crime reporting, received over 34,000 reports about habitual drink and drug drivers, marking a 25% increase from the previous year. Many of these reports have been pivotal in leading to arrests.
Residents of Street and Glastonbury can report drink or drug driving incidents via the Avon and Somerset Police's online portal or by calling 101. For anonymous reporting, Crimestoppers can be reached at 0800 555 111.
In situations where someone is currently driving under the influence, the public is urged to dial 999 immediately.
