The Glastonbury Town Council has confirmed that long-awaited restoration work on St Dunstan's House is going full pelt, thanks to secured funding for essential roof repairs.

The project, which structural challenges and additional repairs have been delayed, now includes the replacement of the building's roof beams and the installation of reclaimed tiles to restore the building's original character.

During the October council meeting, Mayor Lokabee Lokabandhu, who has overseen much of the project, explained the extent of the roof damage. "There were more roof repairs needed than initially anticipated," he said. "A lot of the old rafters had actually not only rotted but also bowed."

This led the contractors, Melhuish and Saunders, to source new reclaimed tiles that matched the building's historic aesthetic.

In addition to roof repairs, the council is working with National Grid to install a new power main for St Dunstan's House. The installation, scheduled to begin soon, will require trench work in the St John's car park to bring in the new line. "There is a new power main having to be provided," Councillor Lokabandhu confirmed, "because the current main wouldn't supply enough electricity for what the building is going to do."

Efforts are being made to minimise disruption during the work, especially on market days.

"National Grid will be completing the work in sections, moving from the corner where Burns the Bread is located and around to the back of St Dunstan's," Councillor Lokabandhu explained. He added that the team will avoid work on Tuesdays to accommodate the weekly market, ensuring that the entire car park remains accessible on those days.

The council has praised the contractors' efforts and hopes to see the building in use soon. Councillor Lokabandhu said he would continue to provide updates on progress, adding, "The repairs on this building are crucial, especially as we approach the winter months." Councillor Rick Cook, who is enthusiastic about the restoration, requested a site visit for those interested in the work on St Dunstan's House.

Once completed, the council plans to repurpose St Dunstan's House as a community space, a project Councillor Lokabandhu described as "a key part of the town's future."
