The scaffolding has finally come down — and Glastonbury just got its first glimpse of the spectacular atrium taking shape at St Dunstan's House.

Once a cluttered outdoor storage yard, the space has been completely transformed as part of the town's new Community Health and Wellbeing Centre — and now, with the internal scaffolding removed, it's clear just how ambitious the project really is.

Towering above is a striking glass roof embedded with solar panels, designed not just to generate clean electricity but to help control glare and heat on sunny days.

Next up: glazed walls, a platform lift, sweeping stone flooring, glass railings, and ceiling lights — all coming soon as the build moves into its final stages.

Around the front, new paving has gone in along with smart new steps up to Magdalene Street, waiting only for the finishing stonework.

Out the back, the tarmac has been ripped up to make way for a landscaped walkway linking to the Abbey, complete with original 19th-century cobbles uncovered during the dig and now worked into the design.

Inside, rotten windows have been replaced, originals restored, and the structure now links seamlessly to a brand-new Changing Places toilet — all topped off with another glass roof for good measure.

The centre, due to open later this year, will house health services, wellbeing programmes and community spaces, forming a key part of Glastonbury's regeneration plans.

What's the timeline?

  • July 2024: Restoration work began on St Dunstan's House, with local firm Melhuish and Saunders leading the project.
  • Early 2025: Construction of the glazed atrium began.
  • Summer 2025: The centre is expected to open its doors to the public.
