Somerset employers team up with Strode College to fix hospitality skills gap

Hospitality and tourism employers from across Somerset have come together to tackle recruitment challenges head-on – and they're doing it with the help of Strode College.
Nine major local employers joined the college for its Hospitality Employer Skills Forum, where they shared real-world insights into the current jobs market and worked together to find practical solutions to support the sector's future.
While recruitment and retention remain hurdles – especially when it comes to seasonal roles and soft skills – the tone of the day was forward-looking. Employers were keen to find ways to support new staff, shift public perceptions of hospitality, and invest in Somerset's homegrown talent.
One common theme was the need to show young people that hospitality isn't just a stop-gap – it's a career. Employers shared examples of staff who had worked their way up, and said more needs to be done to highlight the industry's progression routes and long-term potential.
There was also strong recognition of the need to help young workers gain the confidence, professionalism and workplace awareness that many are still developing. From interview prep to understanding contracts and teamwork, soft skills were a hot topic – and one the group agreed they could help with.
Strode College is already leading the charge, with a range of training options designed to bridge the gap between education and employment. These include apprenticeships, Sector Work-Based Academy Programmes (SWAPs), and adult CPD courses, all offering hands-on experience and industry-ready qualifications.
Employers didn't just nod along – they actively offered support, including placements, guest talks and mock interviews to help students get real-world experience before stepping into their first job.
A college spokesperson said: "It was brilliant to see such strong support from our local hospitality partners. Everyone in the room was committed to giving young people the best possible start in the industry."
The forum ended on a high, with employers and educators united in their mission to build a stronger, more skilled local workforce – and to help the sector thrive.
The event was attended by representatives from the Alfred Gillett Trust, Bishops Palace, Figs Catering, Lane's Hotel, Mill On the Brue, Somerset Larder, Stay Original Company, The Victoria Sports and Social Club, and Wells Cathedral.
