What's On in Street and Glastonbury is brought to you by our sponsors Strode College, Studio24 in Wells and Melhuish and Saunders.

January is shaping up to be a busy month for Street and Glastonbury, with a variety of community events and cultural experiences on offer.

From moving live performances and reflective wellbeing workshops to hands-on community projects, there's plenty happening to bring people together and start the year on a positive note.

Whether you're looking for music, mindfulness, or practical ways to give back, there's something for everyone.

On Friday, 10 January, the Breathe Ensemble will bring the powerful music of John Tavener's The Protecting Veil to The Crown in Pilton. Cellist Harriet Wiltshire and pianist William Drakett will perform the deeply spiritual piece, exploring themes of motherhood, creation, and life's journey. The audience will be invited to relax with a glass of wine in the intimate setting of the historic pub while the music unfolds. Find out more here.

For those looking to start the new year with a moment of reflection, the New Beginnings Quiet Day at the Ammerdown Centre in Radstock offers the perfect opportunity on Saturday, 11 January. Led by Reverend Narinder Tegally, the event encourages participants to reflect on the past year while setting positive intentions for the future. The day begins with a warm welcome at 9:30am, running through to 4pm, with guided sessions designed to inspire focus and clarity. Tickets cost £70, and you can learn more here.

Also on Saturday, 11 January, the Shepton Mallet Repair Café will be open at the Art Bank from 11am to 1pm, offering practical help with household repairs. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with fixing electrical, mechanical, and wooden items, as well as clothing and jewellery repairs. Donations are welcome to help keep the service running. If you have repair skills and want to volunteer, this could be a great chance to get involved. More details here.

For space enthusiasts, the Wells & Mendip Museum will host Mankind's Next Giant Leap on Friday, 10 January. The event, led by Neil Philipson, will explore humanity's potential future as a space-faring civilisation, examining how we could explore and colonise the Solar System and beyond. The talk follows the Wells and Mendip Astronomers' Annual General Meeting, which begins at 7pm. The talk itself will start around 7:45pm, with tickets available at £5 for adults and £3 for students. Find out more here.

Looking ahead, there are plenty more events to keep an eye out for later in the month. BBC Radio 4's Gardeners' Question Time will be recorded at Kilver Court in Shepton Mallet on Tuesday, 14 January, featuring expert panellists answering gardening queries from the local community. Tickets are available for £4.50. Full details here.

For music fans, Studio24 Wells has announced a packed schedule of live performances for 2025, including a Take That Tribute on 25 January, Fleetwood Bac on 30 January, and a Robbie Williams Tribute Night on 22 February. Check out the full lineup here.

With so much happening this January, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you're in the mood for music, personal reflection, or community action, these local events offer a perfect way to get involved and support your community.
