Domestic abuse: Somerset urged to act as conference aims to turn bystanders into allies

A new conference is calling on employers across Somerset to take action on domestic abuse—with organisers warning that many victims are suffering in silence while continuing to work alongside colleagues every day.
The Strong Voices, Safe Communities event, organised by Strode College will take place at Strode Theatre on 2 June and is open to businesses, community leaders, and members of the public who want to better understand how to support survivors and challenge abuse in the workplace and beyond.
One of the keynote speakers will be actress Sam Beckinsale, who will also present her short film Love, based on her own lived experience of coercive control. Beckinsale has become a vocal campaigner for domestic abuse awareness in recent years.
Organisers say the conference will offer practical advice, real-world examples, and clear steps people can take to become more aware of abuse and better equipped to support those affected.
Nationally, only around 20% of domestic abuse incidents are ever reported to the police—leaving employers, friends and neighbours as some of the few people in a position to notice the signs and offer help.
"Survivors, as well as perpetrators, are living and working alongside us every day," say organisers. "You may be one of the few people who can support them or intervene."
The event is free to attend, and while it's primarily aimed at employers in Somerset, all are welcome.
