A Somerset wildlife photographer has captured a fascinating bird courtship display near Ashcott.

Robin Morrison was at RSPB Ham Wall when he spotted an elaborate display by great crested grebe.

He explains: "Over the weekend, I came across a pair of great crested grebes doing their amazing courtship display. This involves the two birds swimming apart, then diving under the water, before returning to the surface with weed items.

"They then swim back together, before finally rising up out of the water and flicking their heads left and right.

"It is all part of their courtship and bonding display and may well indicate to each other that they are ready for nest building.

"Normally the birds only have a small amount of weed but on one occasion one had a significant bit of material which no doubt impressed the other bird."
