Families in Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street are being urged to dig out pre-loved costumes as Somerset libraries launch a county-wide World Book Day swap.

Somerset Council has introduced the Costume Swap scheme ahead of World Book Day on Thursday, March 5, allowing families to donate and pick up outfits at participating libraries.

Libraries in Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Street are among those taking part. Wells is not listed among the participating branches within the information provided.

The scheme launches from half term, with residents invited to drop off clean, good-quality costumes and browse the costume rail for a different outfit. No donation is required to take part.

The initiative follows the success of the Winter Coat Exchange and aims to make World Book Day more affordable while cutting waste.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council's lead member for communities, housing and culture, said the day should be a celebration rather than a financial strain.

"World Book Day is a fantastic celebration of reading and imagination, but we know it can sometimes feel like extra pressure for families," she said.

"This Costume Swap is a simple idea that makes a big difference, helping parents save money, reducing waste and bringing more people into our welcoming library spaces."

The council says the scheme is designed to support local families while encouraging reuse instead of buying new costumes for one-day use.

Other participating libraries include Chard, Ilminster, Langport, Minehead, Porlock, Watchet, Williton, Yeovil, Taunton and Burnham-on-Sea.

Residents in Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Street are encouraged to visit their local library during opening hours to donate or browse available costumes.
