Getting outside on the shortest day of the year and walking is a great way to raise your spirits as well as improving your physical health. 'Winter has its own beauty' says the enthusiastic walk leader Karl Sachs, who has used walking to improve his health, 'we want to help people get outside and appreciate all the seasons'.

The solstice walk is the first of a series of 3 winter walks that Karl is running with mindfulness teacher Ceri Louise Morton Thomas. Both are concerned with the way people are leading 'nature deficit' lives: 'There has been a mass migration of people indoors in the last few years' says Ceri Louise 'when for most of our history, human beings spent most of their time outdoors'. Ceri Louise runs projects for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, helping people to slow down and connect with the natural world around them. The Winter Walks include a mindfulness practice to help people to relax and deepen their experience of being in nature.

Karl points out how great it can feel after you have been out for a walk on a cold day. He says there is no reason to get cold on a walk 'As they say in Finland' Karl states 'there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!' so wrap up warm had head down to the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury where you will be welcomed with a pre-walk mug of hot chocolate on Tuesday.

The walks help support people's mental and physical health and are funded by the Somerset Recovery College and are open to all. A shorter route is available for those who don't want to climb to the top of the Tor. Registration for the walk can be done at the Rural Life Museum on Tuesday. Just send a text or email to let the walk leaders know you are coming.
