Police have ramped up patrols in Street and Glastonbury after a spike in shoplifting left businesses counting the cost.

Officers have been out in force across the Somerset East area in a bid to deter thieves and show would-be offenders they're being watched.

Local businesses are also being urged to report every incident of shoplifting directly to the police – with officers stressing that even smaller thefts help build a clearer picture of what's happening on the ground.

"We know how frustrating and damaging shoplifting can be, especially for small, independent shops," said a spokesperson for the local neighbourhood team. "We're working hard to support business owners and send a message that this sort of behaviour won't be tolerated."

Police say patrols will continue in both towns, with visits to shops and business premises to offer advice and gather intel.

Anyone who witnesses shoplifting is asked to call 101 or report it online.
