Somerset residents are being encouraged to keep Halloween safe and inclusive this year, with Avon and Somerset Police issuing guidance to protect vulnerable people and help everyone enjoy the season.

Neighbourly actions, the police suggest, can make Halloween a safer time for all. They recommend starting with a friendly 'hello' to neighbours and asking if they would appreciate a check-in on the night, either by a visit or phone call. For those not wishing to participate, residents can download and display the police's "sorry, no trick or treaters here" poster to deter unexpected knocks at the door. The police also suggest notifying neighbours if you plan to host a Halloween party, so they are aware of any potential noise.

For parents, discussions with children about respectful trick-or-treating are advised. "Parents might want to remind their children to be mindful of people's homes and properties, particularly when a 'no trick or treat here' sign is displayed," a spokesperson said.

The police's safety tips for trick-or-treaters include:

• Always go out with an adult
• Only visit homes where you know the residents
• Stick to well-lit areas and carry a torch
• Remain in groups unless an adult is with you
• Avoid throwing eggs or flour, as it can lead to criminal damage charges
• Don't talk to strangers or enter homes – stay on the doorstep

Aiming to minimise Halloween-related disruptions, Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "Halloween can be scary for people who are elderly, vulnerable or live alone. This can mean they are at a higher risk of becoming victims of crime if they feel isolated or alone."

The police encourage everyone celebrating to do so with respect and care for those who may find Halloween unsettling. "If you are celebrating Halloween this year, we hope you have a spooktacular time, but stay safe," the spokesperson added. "Please be mindful and respectful that not everyone in our community will be taking part."
