Plans to demolish and rebuild the main teaching block at Strode College in Street have been submitted to Somerset Council.

The Department for Education‑backed proposal would see the existing Block A taken down and replaced with a new three‑storey building off Church Road featuring classrooms, specialist spaces, a training restaurant, community hub and improved connections with Strode Theatre.

According to the design and access statement lodged by the college and Willmott Dixon, the modern facility would provide around 4,643 sqm of teaching, administrative and support space. The new Block A would include state‑of‑the‑art kitchens and hospitality training facilities, alongside general teaching and SEN‑friendly areas.

A key design feature is an enclosed atrium "internal street" linking the college with the adjacent Strode Theatre. This shared space is intended for use by students during the day and by the wider community at other times.

The plans also include new temporary accommodation to maintain teaching during construction and provision of a standalone kitchen and dining facility for neighbouring Crispin Academy. The scheme aims to deliver sustainability features including net‑zero carbon "fabric first" construction, natural ventilation and bio‑solar roofs.

A full planning application was submitted in late 2025 and will be considered by the council's planning committee in early 2026. Construction, if approved, could begin in 2026. Specific timings remain dependent on the council's decision and associated conditions.
