The A361 across the Somerset Levels, connecting Taunton and Glastonbury, remains closed today (8 January) due to ongoing flooding issues.

Somerset Council continues to enforce the closure following significant spillover from Currymoor reservoir late on Friday, 5 January.

Road users are advised to continue using alternative routes, as emergency road closure gates at Burrowbridge and East Lyng will stay shut. The council installed these gates after the 2014 floods, a preventative measure to avoid vehicles being trapped in floodwaters.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's Lead Member for Transport and Digital, emphasised the importance of respecting the closure: "Our teams are monitoring the situation closely. We urge road users to follow the diversions and avoid tampering with the gates. Remember, just 30cm of water can float a car."

The region has been battling with excessive rainfall since the start of the year, leading to Currymoor, Northmoor, and Saltmoor reservoirs reaching full capacity. This resulted in the A361 flooding late Friday night. A flood warning is still in place for East Lyng to Burrowbridge.

Somerset Council's Highways Team will conduct further inspections today, and updates will be provided as soon as possible. In the meantime, drivers can check the status of emergency road closure gates at Emergency road closure gates (somerset.gov.uk), and get travel updates from @TravelSomerset on Twitter and Facebook.
