Ofsted praises Meare nursery but flags staff training gaps
By Laura Linham 3rd Nov 2026
Little Starlings, based at Meare Village Primary School, was inspected by Ofsted on 2 October 2026. The report says safeguarding standards were met and achievement was at the expected standard, with children — including those with special educational needs and disabilities — making progress from their starting points.
Inspectors said children were being prepared well for their next stage of learning. They highlighted babies exploring outdoor spaces and older children building, mark-making and solving problems together.
Staff were praised for inclusive routines, sensitive care and supporting children's communication, including through signs and visual images. The report also describes secure relationships with staff, responsive routines, healthy meals and daily outdoor play.
Parents valued improved communication following a change in leadership, while staff spoke positively about support for their wellbeing and workload. However, inspectors said targeted coaching and training were not fully embedded, and some staff interactions were less purposeful, making the quality of teaching inconsistent.
Leaders were asked to evaluate teaching more consistently and strengthen mentoring and professional development.
