Musicians donate songs in aid of Glastonbury venues

Live music has been turned off by the coronavirus crisis.

All the gigs in Glastonbury have been cancelled and the pubs where the musicians played have had to close.

The musicians are seeking inventive and novel ways to make their work accessible but too often the venues themselves, which provide platforms for rising and mature talent, are overlooked.

However, 100 musicians across the South West have come together to support the venues by donating tracks for a double-sided digital album whose sales will go to keep open Glastonbury venues like the King Arthur pub, Hawthorns Hotel, Rifleman's Arms and Bocabar.

"It can't be underestimated how important these little pubs and clubs are to help musicians earn their everyday bread and butter," said Jem Smith, GFM radio's World Beat presenter.

"They are the lifeblood of the industry and under threat with coronavirus restrictions. Landlords still have expenses despite being unable to open their doors. Losing them would affect all performers."

The album is named Now That's What I Call Glastonbury Calling and will be on bandcamp.com, available now for pre-order and released on June 12. It costs £10 per side or £15 for both. Go to https://glastonburycalling.bandcamp.com/.

Glastonbury Calling has been the South West's most up and coming festival since 2016, using local pubs and music venues to showcase regional talent.

Festival founder and GFM DJ Ian Liversidge said: "It's such a difficult time for music venues so the Glastonbury Calling team have produced something special.

"Rather than ask for a handout we are giving people something for their money."

The bands on the album include White Lion Parade, Alesund, Heavy Lungs, Talisman, Kangaroo Moon and Irie Fire, The Bad Cowboys, China Bears, Dakar Audio Club, Stone Cold Fiction, Laid Blak , Banco de Gaia plus solo artists like Matt Owens (Noah and the Whale), Al O'Kane, Sharon Lazibyrd, Lonely Tourist, Sean McGowan and Duncan Batey.
