Millfield School is celebrating a remarkable achievement as 13 of its athletes and coaches have been selected to compete in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. This milestone underscores the school's long-standing tradition of sporting excellence.
The 33rd Olympic Games will be held in Paris from Friday 26 July to Sunday 11 August 2024, with the Paralympic Games following from 28 August to 8 September 2024. These prestigious events will feature some of the best athletes from around the globe, and Millfield is proud to have a strong representation.
The athletes selected include ten Old Millfieldians, two staff members, and one current member of the Swimming Performance Squad:
- Swimmers: Matthew Richards (GB), James Guy (GB), Kieran Bird (GB), Mia Phiri (Zambia), Max McCusker (Ireland), and Emma Harvey (Bermuda)
- Coach: Ryan Livingstone (GB, Millfield Performance Coach)
- Rowers: Helen Glover (GB), Rory Gibbs (GB), and Annie Campbell-Orde (GB)
- Triathlete: Erica Hawley (Bermuda)
- Paralympic swimmer: Suzanna Hext (GB)
- Fencing coach: Glen Golding (GB, Millfield Fencing Coach)
This year's selection is particularly notable for the inclusion of seven swimmers, the most Millfield has ever had at the Games.
Gavin Horgan, Headmaster of Millfield, said: "The entire Millfield community is delighted to have 13 athletes and coaches from Millfield involved in the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris. They are an inspiration to all of us now and in the future. We wish them good luck and will be watching them every step of the way."
Millfield has a rich Olympic history, boasting 79 Olympians since the school first participated in the Games in 1956. Over the years, Millfield athletes have won a total of 19 medals: seven golds, five silvers, and seven bronzes. At the 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic), 13 Millfield athletes competed, with James Guy securing two golds and a silver, making him one of the standout performers.
The school's commitment to nurturing sporting talent continues to pay dividends, with this latest group of athletes set to make their mark on the world stage in Paris.
